Visit to Nissan Manufacturing UK factory in Sunderland

Join us for a tour of one of the most productive car plants in Europe.

We are delighted to announce that Nissan Manufacturing UK (NMUK) has kindly agreed to again host a tour of its car manufacturing plant in Sunderland.

Event information

The NMUK plant was opened in 1986 and became the sole supplier of the Nissan Bluebird to the UK market. Ongoing development has brought Britain’s largest car plant to today’s impressive employment figure of circa 7,000 people and the fastest in UK Automotive history to reach the three million mark with one model, the Nissan Qashqai.

During a full tour of the site, we will get the chance to visit the Press Shop where steel panels are pressed with over 5,000 tonnes of force, the Body Shop which is home to over 1,000 robots and Final Assembly where around 3,000 parts are fitted to the car body.

The visit at its plant just off the A19 on Washington Rd, Sunderland, Tyne and Wear SR5 3NS, will comprise a short introductory session followed by the tour at 5pm. As the tour will involve walking up to 3 miles, it is physically demanding. Anyone who has a heart pacemaker fitted cannot take the tour.

Numbers are strictly limited and bookings will therefore be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. Please therefore only book if you intend to come otherwise you could be taking a place that could have been taken by someone else.

The use of cameras, phones or recording devices is forbidden and all attendees must:

  • Wear long trousers, long sleeved tops and enclosed, flat, sturdy shoes;
  • Having parked, please check-in at the main security gate at 4.15pm. You will then be directed to an on-site meeting point. Please be aware of traffic conditions at that time!

Unless all places have been taken beforehand, the closing date for online bookings is Friday 1st February 2019. It is essential that you specifically name all attendees as security will check all visitors against the list of bookings that they will have received in advance.

Online booking closes on Friday 10 November.

Speaker – Lembit Opik

Lembit-OpikBangor

Born in 1965 in Bangor, Northern Ireland to Estonian parents, Lembit Öpik is one of the most characterful and recognised politicians of his generation.

Newcastle upon Tyne

In 1988, after some dramatic years in student politics, Lembit joined American multi-national giant Procter & Gamble, where he worked in the advertising department on a number of household brands including Ariel and Fairy Liquid, rising to the role of Global Human Resources Training & Development Manager.

At the same time he pursued a parallel career in politics as a Liberal Democrat councillor in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Drinks-at-Teesside-Dinner - Northern Society of Chartered AccountantsMontgomeryshire

In 1997, Lembit was elected to Parliament as the MP for Montgomeryshire in Wales. Very quickly he began to be recognised as one of the more energetic and entertaining MPs in the country, with regular appearances on everything from Question Time to Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, and most of the major entertainment shows in between.

‘The show had to go on’

In 2010, Lembit lost his seat in one of the most surprising results of the General Election. Despite this blow, 5 hours later he kept his promise to appear on the election special edition of Have I Got News for You in what was regarded as one of the strongest performances for any politician on the show. As Lembit said ‘I lost my seat, not my resolve. The show had to go on.’

TSCA - Northern Society of Chartered AccountantsSince then, contrary to expectations, Lembit has continued to increase his profile and in 2010 appeared on the blockbusting reality show I’m a Celebrity – get me out of here!

In August 2016 Lembit performed in the comedy Rocking Your Vote in which he played himself. The play was on the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

In November 2017 Lembit will be able to add entertaining to his many feats! Don’t miss it!

In support of MFC Foundation

MFC Foundation works across Teesside, delivering sport, health, education and inclusion projects that raise aspirations and change lives amongst the most vulnerable and disadvantaged in local communities.

MFC-Foundation-logoMFC Foundation was set up by Steve Gibson in 1996 as the independent charitable arm of Middlesbrough FC. Though it uses the official ‘Boro’ brand to engage with various members of the community, MFC Foundation exists as a separate entity from the football club.

‘Our mission is simple, by harnessing the passion and power of the Football Club brand, we work to raise aspirations and improve the life chances of young people and adults across Teesside.

We work in some of the most disadvantaged areas of Teesside, engaging with those who are hard to reach through the delivery of inspiring sport, education, health and inclusion projects.’

Women in Finance

Three times as many female members take career breaks compared to males. This can result in disengagement with the profession and loss of talent from the sector. Gender diversity in the workplace is fundamental to business success. Research has shown that companies with more women in leadership positions are more profitable and more efficient.

On Thursday 17 November, the North East Young Chartered Accountants Group (NEYCAG), in partnership with Nigel Wright and PwC, are hosting a Women in Finance Seminar.

The event aims to provide an “off the record” and informal opportunity for female members of the North East Young Chartered Accountants Group (NEYCAG) to hear about the experiences of senior female finance professionals.

Following brief introductions from the speakers, there will be a talk show style discussion addressing a range of topics.

TV comedy writer John Lloyd CBE to speak at Northern Society of Chartered Accountants Business and Awards Dinner

John is an English television producer and writer best known for his work on such comedy television programmes as Not the Nine O’Clock News, Spitting Image, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, Blackadder and QI.

He is currently the presenter of BBC Radio 4’s The Museum of Curiosity, a spin-off of QI.

He worked as a radio producer at the BBC between 1974 and 1978 and created The News Quiz, The News Huddlines, To The Manor Born (with Peter Spence) and Quote… Unquote (with Nigel Rees). He wrote Hordes of the Things (as J. H. W. Lloyd) with Andrew Marshall, co-authored two episodes of Doctor Snuggles with Douglas Adams, and went on to co-write the fifth and sixth episodes of the first radio series of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy with Adams (Douglas Adams wrote all the previous and subsequent episodes solo, as well as the television adaptation – though Lloyd was involved in the TV series as associate producer). He also produced The Burkiss Way.

John then worked as a TV producer at both the BBC and ITV 1979–1989, where he created Not the Nine O’Clock News (with Sean Hardie) and Spitting Image (with Peter Fluck and Roger Law). He also produced all four Blackadder series.

He was originally to have been the host of BBC topical news quiz Have I Got News For You, with the programme initially intended to be called John Lloyd’s Newsround. A pilot episode of the show was recorded under this name in mid-1990, with John hosting alongside team captains Ian Hislop and Paul Merton. He subsequently decided to pull out of hosting the programme full-time and the pilot episode was never broadcast. John was replaced by Angus Deayton as host and the show was renamed Have I Got News for You in time for its debut on BBC2 later that year.

John was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2011 New Year Honours for services to broadcasting.

Remember those days when you thought all there was to being an accountant was knowing about accountancy? Or even when you thought you’d never master accountancy but that if you did, you could relax, knowing the worst is behind you?

Sorry – but being a good at accountancy is only the beginning of being an accountant. You also need to know about ‘people’.

In this presentation, Dr Simon Raybould will be showing us some of the tools, tricks, tips and techniques that psychologists and researchers have uncovered for motivating people; for getting them to do what you want them to do. Let’s face it, if you’re ever going to manage people, that’s probably your number one skill!
