Aspiring accountants from Consett Academy win Newcastle BASE competition 21 March 2014

Students from Consett Academy beat off competition from 4 other local teams to win the second Newcastle heat of BASE 2014.

The second Newcastle heat of the BASE competition took place at Northumbria University on Wednesday 12 March 2014.

BASE links schools, students and employers together in a bid to not only increase awareness of a career in chartered accountancy and finance, but also helps to develop key employability skills in the future workforce.

The BASE competition was supported by local firms including PwC, National Audit Office, Next Level Financial Management and Ryecroft Glenton who provided professional mentors and judges. In addition students and teachers were given the chance to hear fist hand accounts about the range of career options ICAEW chartered accountancy can provide.

Keith Proudfoot, ICAEW Regional Director Northern, said: “The calibre of entrants at our BASE heat at Northumbria University was, once again, very impressive and I expect I’ll be seeing more of these young people in leading roles in the future. These young business advisers are looking beyond the numbers and adding their social and ethical acumen to give rounded advice. Being a chartered accountant is not just adding up numbers, it’s communicating what those numbers mean to business”

BASE at Northumbria UniversityHead Judge Jeanette Brown, President of the Northern Society of Chartered Accountants and Director of Cumbrian Chartered Accountancy Firm Dodd & Co said: “Being in business is all about overcoming challenges to reach your goals. You have to have passion; you must have enthusiasm and you must be determined – and there were huge amounts of all of these things in the room this afternoon. I was very impressed and it was an almost an impossible task choosing the winner.  From the judges’ side, the one thing I hope we achieved this afternoon is to break down some of the perceived barriers to working within a business environment –  a career in business is open to anyone who wants to work hard and persevere. As an employer, I would have happily employed any one of those young people on the winning team – and quite a few on the other teams as well! If the BASE entrants today are anything to go by, I think the entrepreneurial future of our region is in very safe hands and I wish each of them every success in their future careers.”

The mentor of the winning team Sarah Brown, PwC said: “I am delighted that my team were the winners of this heat, they worked well as a team. I was impressed with their recommendations and the way they dealt with the judges challenging questions.”

Consett Academy will now go on to represent their region at the national final which takes place at the Hilton Metropole Hotel, Birmingham on Wednesday 25 June 2014.
