Supporting young chartered accountants

Mentor a school or college team for ICAEW BASE 2017 12 July 2016

Do you have what it takes to mentor the winning teams to represent the North East, Teesside, northern Yorkshire and Cumbria at the ICAEW BASE 2017 national final?

Are you a recently qualified ICAEW Chartered Accountant?

What is ICAEW BASE?

BASE is ICAEW’s national Business and Accounting competition for students in school or college aged 16-19. A unique and exciting experience, students are able to engage in a real life business challenge that enables them to develop key employability skills and understand what it’s like to be an ICAEW Chartered Accountant.

What happens at BASE?

Schools and colleges are invited to attend one of 44 heats across the UK. Each team is presented with information about a business scenario which outlines a range of challenges. Students will need to provide innovative recommendations to present to a panel of judges, outlining what they have found and their advice to the issues at hand.

At each of the 44 heats, we will seek to find a winning and runner-up team. All winning teams will secure their place at our spectacular National Final, taking place in Birmingham in June. It is there we will find our BASE National Champions.

How to get involved

As experts in the accountancy, finance and business profession, we are looking for your support at our BASE heats and National Final. There are various volunteering roles available, including; becoming a team mentor, judge or exhibitor.

What is the role of a Mentor?

As a mentor, you’ll use your knowledge, skills and experience to guide your team through the business case, helping them to achieve their goal of winning the heat and securing a place at the National Final! There may be concepts that students come across that they haven’t experienced before, especially where financial information is concerned. You won’t be expected to teach students or have a significant input into their decision making, but you’ll be there to encourage them to stay on task and understand the concepts presented to them.
