Drawing on the experience of our two speakers – Rebecca Benneyworth and Karen Barwick – the aim of this course is to provide tips for those key moments which can require careful tax planning and financial arrangements as clients start to contemplate their business exit and retirement.

This half day on-line course will benefit partners, manager and other members of staff who need to give tax and financial planning advice to business and personal clients.  A reasonable tax knowledge is assumed.

Our two speakers will cover:

  • Differences between Enduring and Lasting Powers of Attorney;
  • Risks associated if you do not make a will;
  • Vulnerable client policy;
  • Different routes to care funding and pitfalls to avoid;
  • Capital gains tax issues – private residence relief; maintaining the relief; gifts of assets; business asset disposals;
  • Income tax issues – pre-owned asset charge (a refresher); other income tax issues;
  • Inheritance tax – implications of financial plans; residential nil rate band and downsizing relief.

Speakers

Rebecca Benneyworth BSc FCA MBE

Rebecca Benneyworth BSc FCA MBE

Rebecca is an ICAEW Chartered Accountant. She is a lecturer, writer and consultant on a variety of taxes, lecturing extensively throughout the UK, to accountants, business people and also to HMRC and the Treasury.

She has her own accountancy practice based in Gloucestershire, with a variety of small business and personal tax clients. During the last two years this has become a 100% digital practice.

She is Chair of the HMRC Digital Advisory Group, providing help and support to HMRC in understanding the challenges that Making Tax Digital presents to small businesses and their advisers. She is also a member of the Admin Burdens Advisory Board, an independent group monitoring the burdens the tax system impose on businesses.

Rebecca is a past Chair of the Tax Faculty of the ICAEW, and serves on the Tax Faculty Board. She is ICAEW council member for South West England, and was awarded an MBE for services to the tax profession in 2012.

Karen Barwick – Director, Laurus Associates Ltd

Laurus Associates Ltd., was established in 2002 by Karen Barwick and Colin Dawson, and continues to build on the long term relationships already formed between numerous legal and accountancy firms.

Karen Barwick is drawing on her past experiences of pensions gained from both a leading life office and a large national corporate IFA. This has resulted in advice as a specialist nature, predominantly to the business community, and also to private clients.
