Northern Society of Chartered Accountants

At the heart of northern business since 1882

The Port of Tyne ten 24 June 2014

As part of the Tyne and Wear branch’s initiative to get behind the running of a North East business, ten members and non-members enjoyed a presentation on the history and current operations of the Port of Tyne, a tour of part of their areas of operation, followed by a Q&A session.

This was an excellent opportunity to get behind the scenes of one of the UK’s major deep sea ports, named North East Business of the Year 2013 in the NE Business Awards.

The presentation at the beginning provided an historical understanding of the Port up to the present day as well as an insight to its exciting future plans.  The Port is part of the geographical fabric of the North East and its local engagement was obvious to see. Under security escort, a first for many if not all of the group, a coach took us around the south-side of operations, passing the Nissan vehicles ready for export to Rotterdam for their onward trip, imported coal stocks and wood pellets for onward rail transport to fuel UK power stations, logistics areas readying cargo containers for onward road as well as sea crossings, the tea-blending facility…

The list goes on and is it difficult to hide the hyperbole of what the trip covered, recognising that this was only part of the Port’s operations!

We would like to thank the Port of Tyne and Andy Foster, the Port’s Commercial Manager, in particular, for this fascinating and well-organised visit.

If you would be willing to host a similar tour and understanding of your business, please get in-touch with Chris Soan, Tyne and Wear branch Chairman.
