On a warm night, despite it being early-October, the Tyne and Wear Society arranged for a brewery tour and beer tasting at the Big Lamp Brewery in Newburn, the oldest micro-brewery in the North East.
A healthy 24-strong group enjoyed a bespoke tour behind the scenes of this converted pumping station and, in the Tyne and Wear Chairman’s opinion, one of the North East’s finest micro real ale breweries.
Chris Soan said: ‘Not only did we taste the products, we enjoyed a ‘hands-on’ visit by sampling the grains and various hops that go into the beer, brewed in the traditional way. Between us, we managed to test-drive Big Lamp’s ‘Sunny daze’, ‘Big Lamp bitter’, ‘Prince Bishop Ale’, ‘Lamp Light’, the list is endless but it was a superb opportunity to see and taste the product of the process that we had just witnessed. The Saturday morning after was, perhaps for some, a little hazy.’
The Tyne and Wear Committee would like to thank one of Big Lamp’s partners, George, for taking us around and providing excellent beer and food. The bottle of beer, celebrating the brewery’s three decades, was a delightful memento to take away.
