We are delighted to be running in association with the IoD NE, director development seminars – the role of the chief executive.

Event information

IoD North East and ICAEW are pleased to introduce the new series of five director development breakfast seminars.

Subjects to be covered include:

The role of the chairman;
The role of the chief executive;
The role of the finance director;
The role of the non-executive director; and
The role of the sales and marketing director.

We are delighted to welcome speakers from a wide variety of backgrounds who will talk about their experience in their day to day role in their own particular work environment. There will be a question and answer session.

Members will have the opportunity to network with other directors from both organisations in an informal atmosphere.

Registration is from 07:30.

Speakers

Brian Palmer

Brian Palmer, Tharsus born and raised in Newcastle, Brian gained a Mechanical Engineering degree at University of Manchester in 1988 before returning to the North East to join Nissan Motor Manufacturing as a graduate engineer.

Nine years later, having progressed within Nissan to an engine design role, worked for Ford as a diesel engine Program Manager and assisted with the sale of the family business Prempack Ltd, Brian lead the MBI of The Tharsus Welding and Sheet Metal Company Ltd, a sub contract sheet metal fabrication business with an interesting customer base.

With a clear focus on expansion, Brian created Tharsus Direct Ltd in 2005 supplying cable management systems mainly for the roll out of high speed broadband and in 2007 Direct Message Ltd was acquired and transformed into Tharsus Vision Ltd, specialising in outdoor advertising equipment.

By 2012, the various Tharsus entities had become Tharsus Group and the primary focus and growth driver for the business had become developing an OEDM (Original Equipment Design and Manufacture) service.

In 2013 Brian was named IoD North East, Investor Director of the year.

David Grailey

David Grailey, NCFE has over 23 years’ experience in the education and skills sector, primarily with awarding organisations.  He joined NCFE in January 2007, having spent the previous seven years as CEO of the Food & Drink Qualifications awarding organisation.

David has responsibility for 3 Directorates and is the link to the NCFE Board.

Major achievements included re-branding the awarding organisation and making it the market leader in the food and drink manufacturing qualifications sector, increasing the number of learners achieving sector qualifications, restructuring qualifications to ensure they are aligned with QCF requirements, outstanding QCA and SQA audit results for NVQs, VRQs and SVQs respectively.

David also worked in further and higher education, with a National Training Organisation and with two national private training providers, giving him detailed understanding of the drivers from many perspectives within the education, training and development sectors.

He has too a Fellowship to his name, an MSc in Marketing and Product Management from Cranfield University, member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and has numerous membership of other professional bodies.  In 2000 he was bestowed the Freedom of the City of London and at the same time became a Liverymen of 1 of London’s oldest Livery Companies.  David is a qualified Food Technologist.
