Guest Speaker – Rowan McCabe

Guest speaker: Rowan McCabe is a poet and performer

Rowan McCabe is a poet and performer. Aware that poetry isn’t a proper job, he decided to create his own and became the world’s first Door-to-Door Poet. Knocking on strangers’ doors, he asks what is important to them. He then goes away and writes a poem about this, free of charge, before bringing it back and performing it on their doorstep. It’s sort of like the Avon lady…but with rhymes.

Rowan, has also written poems for Channel 4, Radio 3’s ‘The Verb’ and his work has been featured in The Guardian and on BBC Breakfast. He has performed on stages around the UK, including Glastonbury Festival and the Royal Albert Hall. In 2020, the National Trust invited him to be poet in residence at Wordsworth House.

Mark Rhys, ICAEW National Deputy President 2022-23

Mark Rhys has spent over thirty years auditing banking and capital market clients. His experience encompasses retail, commercial and investment banking, securitisation, stock broking, derivatives structuring and commodity trading. Mark is Deloitte’s Global IFRS for Banks co-leader and his specialty is financial instrument accounting. This role sees him regularly briefing non-executives, clients and regulators on the challenges and consequences of the shift from incurred to expected loss provisioning. In addition to his role as Partner and IFRS for Banks co-lead, he is Deloitte’s global lead contact for interactions with the Financial Stability Board. As joint chair of the GPPC’s Bank Working Group, he leads regular discussions between the profession, the FSB and IFIAR regarding bank accounting and audit quality. Mark also is the firm’s representative on the BCBS Accounting Experts Group and a member of the PRA’s Practitioner Panel. Mark is Deloitte’s representative on the FSB’s Enhanced Disclosure Task Force, where he led the credit risk disclosure working group. He was the first chairman of the ICAEW’s Financial Services Faculty and is a member of the ICAEW’s Technical Strategy Board.

In support of Community Foundation Tyne and Wear and Northumberland

We are keen to raise funds in support of charities located and active in the Northern Society region. This year our choice of charities to support recognises the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on local households.

We are fundraising in aid of Community Foundation Tyne and Wear and Northumberland Registered Charity No. 700510. The Community Foundation will match fund up to £5,000 and make grants to FareShare North East and FareShare Lancashire and Cumbria.
