Northern Society of Chartered Accountants

At the heart of northern business since 1882

2022 Dilemmas 1 December 2021

2022 Dilemmas – some thoughts from Yvonne Gale CEO at NEL Fund Managers and Deputy President, Northern Society of Chartered Accountants

Writing any article amid covid is fraught with difficulties. Will the content fall out of step with guidance in the time between being written and being read?

Imagine the often behind the scenes debates over meeting and event organising. Planning face-to-face meet ups is a leap of faith but the courses committee for Northern Society of Chartered Accountants have taken that bold step. The ICAEW have an excellent Essentials programme all on line backed up with on demand.

What do local members need

At Northern Society we have always tried to ask ‘what do local members need that is not already available from ICAEW?’

This year we were of the view that there may be members struggling with purely online training.

That struggle might be due to the noise of a busy office if they are working back in the office. At home, it could be the interruptions from pets or the doorbell breaking their concentration.

Learning can need the mindful awareness of being away from your normal world and often the best way to achieve that is in the company of others also focusing on their CPD. An added benefit is the ability to iron out confusion over the often vital mid-point tea break. So our plan is to offer in person CDP for 2022.

So, despite the worry of shifting guidance, we made the bold step of constructing an in person face-to-face training programme.

Worry not there are multiple safety factors, a new venue brings the opportunity of physical spacing and fresh air.

There is also a hybrid attendance back-up. If on the day, attending in person is not right for you, the content can be accessed via a live stream.

Not the same as in person but sensible if you have sudden sniffles or pet sitting drama. Kicking off the 2022 programme is ‘What makes a good audit senior’ at Blaydon Rugby Club on 24 March 2022.

We look forward to seeing you in person at some point in 2022.
