An ultimate evening at NorSCA dinner 15 October 2013

The Northern Society of Chartered Accountants (NorSCA) hosted its 131st Annual Dinner in the Banqueting Hall at Newcastle upon Tyne’s Civic Centre on Thursday 10 October 2013.

Jeanette Brown, President NorSCA, welcomed more than 300 members and guests who attended the dinner and spoke passionately about the opportunities that there were to have a rewarding career through working with business in the north east and Cumbria.  Jeanette also introduced our keynote speaker Michelle Mone OBE.  Michelle is the owner of MJM International and creator of Ultimo, the UK’s leading designer lingerie brand.  Her story was inspirational, particularly her quest to give back to the community in thanks for her own success.

Other speakers included Martyn Jones, President ICAEW who in a former life at ATC in Newcastle guided many of those present through their examinations.  He gave an update on ICAEW issues and looked at some of the valuable contributions made by local ICAEW members in this region. Rev Julia Powley, a former partner at Dodd & Co said the Grace.  Verity Dobbie, Newcastle Law Society gave the toast to the ICAEW.  Paul Woolston, Chairman, North East LEP gave the toast to the guests as well as speaking about the work of the LEP and the many benefits of doing business in the north.

The Student of the Year Award was made to Sophie Seeber of Deloitte.

Our nominated charity was the Community Foundation which aims to strengthen communities and enrich local life by supporting generous people and businesses to give back to their local area.  Ian Brown spoke on behalf of the charity. Over £2,600 was raised during the evening and the proceeds will be shared between the four community foundations in Tyne & Wear/Northumberland, County Durham, Cumbria and Tees Valley.

The Northern Society of Chartered Accountants (NorSCA) represents ICAEW members working in business and the finance profession across the North East of England, Teesside, Northern Yorkshire and Cumbria. We have been assisting businesses in the north of England and producing chartered accountants for over 130 years.
