Is your December going to be full of busy and cold weather? If so, our quiz is the perfect ‘warm up’ for the festivities. Whilst we can’t guarantee good weather, we can guarantee this event will be a great chance to socialise and network with fellow NCASS members, along with the opportunity to unwind as the weekend draws closer! Challenge your friends from member firms for bragging rights as the NCASS quiz takes our accountants inquisitive natures out of work and into the Hancock for a night of all things North East!

Teams can be up to 5 people, but no more than 5 per team. 

Your ticket price of £5 will get you entry into the quiz, a drink on arrival and some nibbles on the tables during the quiz.

Prizes will be on offer for the winners of the quiz – just in case you needed an added incentive.  Let’s Get Quizzical !!

INFLATABLES SHOULDN’T JUST BE FOR CHILDREN – THAT IS A FACT.  THEY SHOULD BE FOR ACCOUNTANTS TOO!

Event information

Isn’t it great to let off some steam with colleagues after the working day is done? You can do just that by coming along to the UK’s largest indoor inflatable arena and have a bounce with us- this September, our NCASS event sees us take over InflateSpace for an hour, allowing you the opportunity to take on the RocketRacers, Space Jam Slam Dunk and many more activities on a Thursday evening. A great opportunity to socialise and network in an informal setting with no shortage of laughs!

This is a perfect opportunity to wind down after a day’s work in a unique manner! Why not get your co-workers involved and challenge each other to a duel on the Battle Beam, or take on college peers in a race through the Planet Pillars? InflateSpace is the perfect place for astronomical team building.

Whilst there is parking on site, it is noted that during peak times the carpark can be filled. An alternate route to InflateSpace is to use the Metro – it is located directly behind Walkergate station. It is also noted that you will have to sign a Waiver on the InflateSpace website prior to bouncing. As noted above, by purchasing this ticket the same waiver is in place with regards to any liability from NCASS.

Yvonne Gale
NEL Fund Managers are an economic development impact investor committed to growing the North East economy by investing in growing local small businesses.
Yvonne is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and an Associate Member of the Institute of Economic Development. She holds a DBA, MBA, IOD Diploma in Company Direction and is an FCA approved person. Dr Gale’s area of research is investment decision making. She is also a member of the Advisory and Decision Committee for the UAE Ministry of Finance-backed, Mohammed bin Rashid AED 2 billion Innovation Fund.
Prior to joining NEL, she qualified as a Chartered Accountant with BDO Binder Hamlyn and has held senior management positions in several high growth businesses. She brings a wealth of experience of working with growing businesses.

Joanna Berry
Joanna was born and brought up in Hartlepool, NorthEast England. Her academic experience runs from her Oxford University law degree (1985) to her MBA and PhD from Newcastle University. Her MBA focused on the impact of broadband connectivity on the TV industry, and her PhD took this one step further, using her creation and management of a London-based record label as a lens through which to assess the impact of digital technologies on the music industry’s business models and value chains.
Joanna is Regional Chair for the Institute of Directors and Board member of the Social Acumen Community Trust, where she focuses on community businesses and social enterprise. She is Board member for the NorthEast LEP “ScaleUp NorthEast” programme, where she is advising companies across the NorthEast LEP geography and in most industrial sectors, to help them scale and succeed.
Her professional experience encompasses law (mostly company and contract, practiced in South Africa from 1985 to 1987) but also science, creativity and technology. Joanna has undertaken a variety of international business development roles in marketing, advertising and publishing. Roles include Manager of Europe and East Asia for the World Economic Forum and international PR manager for Mobil 1 Motorsport with McLaren.
Joanna has founded, bought and run a variety of digital and creative companies, and continues her personal and practical involvement with new venture start-ups. Her current research and teaching interests encompass innovation, entrepreneurship, big data, ageing and health and the digital/creative industries. She places a particular emphasis on supporting the ‘women in STEM’ agenda in a variety of ways. She works closely with the Assistant Dean of External Relations and undertakes a wide variety of public and media activities, writing regular columns for NorthEast business paper The Journal and presenting a variety of insight activities with regionally-based businesses including Kromek, Ford Aerospace, Aston Martin, Barbour and intu MetroCentre.

NCASS Newcastle Annual Ball 2018

Following on from the success of our 2017 annual dinner we are pleased to announce that the 2018 dinner will be held on 16th March 2018 at the new location of The Biscuit Factory.

Arrival will be at 19:00 for a 19:30 start and the evening will finish at 01:00. Included in the ticket price will be a welcome drink upon arrival, a three course meal, half a bottle of wine per person and an after dinner disco.

NCASS Annual pub quiz

NCASS’ annual pub quiz makes its return!

This is a good chance to test your general knowledge in teams and meet other accountants in the North East! With a free drink, cash prizes and spot prizes, what more could you want from a pub quiz?

This year’s quiz will be held on Thursday 21st September at The Central pub in Gateshead. The event will cost £3 per person – please bring along your money on the evening. Please arrive no later than 6.15pm for your free drink, ready for a 6.30pm start.

Our principal guest speakers this year will be BBC Business and BBC Breakfast journalist Steph McGovern and ICAEW President Nick Parker.

Speakers Nick Parker and Steph McGovern

We are delighted to announce that we will be joined by Nick Parker, ICAEW President who will speak at the dinner.

Nick Parker is President of ICAEW, and he is a tax partner with RSM UK. He has had a wide portfolio of clients including professional partnerships and UK subsidiaries of overseas parent companies, but he has mainly specialised in the SME sector.

During his time on Council he has chaired a variety of committees including the Members Board, the Committee of Council and the Audit Committee. He was Chairman of Council for three years.

During his career, Nick has lived in Hampshire and has worked in London, Edinburgh, Southampton and Basingstoke. He is married with two grown up sons, one who is an equine surgeon and the other who is an equine yard manager.

In his spare time he likes to undertake adventures – he trekked to the base camp of Everest, trekked in Patagonia, sailed from Sydney to Cape Town across the Southern Ocean as part of the Global Challenge Yacht race and most recently attempted to climb Mount Aconcagua in Argentina, the highest mountain in the Western hemisphere. He also held a private pilot’s licence which has lapsed.

We are delighted to announce that our guest speaker this year will be BBC Breakfast’s business journalist Steph McGovern.

For over a decade Steph McGovern has reported on business and finance from around the world; from international summits to small business success stories. She is an established part of the BBC Breakfast team, covering business developments daily, and also regularly taking to the sofa as main co-host.

During the financial crash Steph was the lead producer of financial news, working with then Business Editor Robert Peston at the forefront of the award-winning coverage of the credit crunch and banking crisis. She soon began broadcasting herself, and Steph has presented on 5Live, Radio 4 and on the Chris Evans show on Radio 2.

Steph’s Breakfast duties include meeting first-hand those on Britain’s business frontline. Speaking to factory workers and FTSE 100 CEOs, Steph’s mission is to uncover and explain what’s going on in the real economy.

Taking business away from news coverage Steph launched her own children’s TV show looking for the next generation of entrepreneurs, Pocket Money Pitch on CBBC. She is also the co-host of a new BBC One prime time show Shop Well For Less.

Off-screen Steph is also involved in BBC community projects such as BBC Outreach and BBC School Report. She is also a mentor for young people in her native Teesside and regularly runs workshops for schoolchildren around the North East. A former champion Irish dancer and still keeps her foot in, often attending international competitions, where she helps to coach dancers

Butterwick Hospices offer better quality of life through pain and symptom control, soothing and beneficial therapies, helpful family support and ongoing bereavement counselling.

Butterwick Hospice in Stockton has been caring for the communities in the Borough of Stockton on Tees for over 30 years. The Hospice offers a wide range of supportive day services for people suffering life limiting illnesses and offers care and support to patients families. Butterwick Hospice, Stockton also offers 10 In-patient beds. The Hospice expertise is freely available to those living in Stockton, Billingham, Yarm, Norton and Eaglescliffe and surrounding villages.

Butterwick Hospice at Bishop Auckland provides many services to communities around the Durham Dales and Sedgefield areas including day services, palliative home care, outreach day hospices and services to people suffering from progressive neurological illnesses.

Butterwick House Childrens Hospice offers a very warm welcome to babies, children, teenagers, young adults and their families. Most of the children and young people who come to Butterwick House need round the clock care – 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  Some children and young adults come for the day, many come for a short break either by themselves or with their family

At Spirited Networking there will be a wide range of sampling from distillers who have come to showcase their own drinks, or brands who represent gins from across the world.
