Younger members take part in ICAEW BusinessFutures conference 20 February 2014

Earlier this month younger members from Northern Society of Chartered Accountants (NorSCA) took part in a conference on what the issues might be affecting business in 2030. Emma Forrester took part in the ICAEW BusinessFutures conference as part of her role representing Cumbria on the ICAEW Student Council (ISC).

Emma is a recently qualified ICAEW Chartered Accountant from Dodd & Co, Chartered Accountants in Penrith and is also the Chair of the Cumberland Chartered Accountant Students’ Society (CCASS). The event involved attending a conference at Chartered Accountants’ Hall at Moorgate and then on to an evening reception on the terrace at the House of Commons.

ICAEW BusinessFutures is a new long-term project looking at the potential changes to the business environment over the next two or three decades. This will affect business across the UK including the Northern Society area in the north east & Cumbria.  More information can be found at icaew.com/businessfutures.

ICAEW currently has four BusinessFutures committees looking to report on Business Futures, focussing on the key areas of: Skills, Ageing, Water & Energy and Taxation. The committees will consider the potential impact of each of these areas on the future of business. This event allowed ICAEW members and ACA students to debate the interim findings before the final reports are released in May 2014 to form part of the ICAEW’s contribution to the International Festival of Business in Liverpool on 1 July 2014.

Emma was also joined at the conference by John Howarth, Chair of the Northern Chartered Accountant Students’ Society (NCASS) and Vice Chair of the ICAEW Student Council and other representatives from the Northern Society of Chartered Accountants (NorSCA).

The evening reception was an opportunity to visit the House of Commons and network with ICAEW members in business and practice, MPs, peers, Treasury and BIS officials, policy experts and regulators. Attendees were also addressed by Nicky Morgan MP, Economic Secretary to the Treasury and Rt Hon Ed Balls MP, Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer.

The Northern Society of Chartered Accountants (NorSCA) represents ICAEW members working in business and the finance profession across the North East of England, Teesside and Cumbria. We have been assisting businesses in the north of England and producing chartered accountants for over 130 years.
